Sometimes, I feel like there is a lot of self induced pressure to have fun on your birthday. People normally tell you “Happy Birthday! Hope you have a great day!” or “Hope you have a great start to your new year!” For some, it can kind of be like New Year’s Day where you start some new resolutions, and others may have a let’s-eat-an-entire-family-size-Lay’s Sour Cream and Onion Chips kind of day. We have all seen Sixteen Candles where Molly Ringwald’s family completely forgets her birthday or that Bob’s Burgers episode where Bob’s wife Linda has a completely HORRIBLE day on her birthday, so you know the pressure can be real.
The Birthday Formula (I read about it here, and I think is made up) is customized to each individual and it is what will make your birthday the best day ever! For some, it may be a trip away, and for others, it might be going out for ice cream. I’ve thought long and hard about what my birthday formula is, and here is what I’ve come up with:
birthday wish + yummy food + a few hours of relaxation + connecting with loved ones = My Birthday Formula!
I don’t need fancy gifts, but I do love cute cards with sweet messages. This year, Yung surprised me by decorating our home with a homemade sign and balloons. We also had fancy donuts and he made me the best card as well. I got several hours of pampering in at the nail and hair salon, and ended the evening eating ramen, which is one of my favorite foods. I loved hearing from all of my family and friends, and it always amuses me to see which random person I haven’t spoken to in 15 years wishes me Happy Birthday on Facebook. We all know it’s true! My work also completely SPOILED me the next day with way too much stuff!

My 30th last year was spent working and it was undocumented. It was rainy and cool and I had hibachi for lunch with my good friend. I was too busy wedding stressing, unfortunately <3
Tell me what your birthday formula is!
XOXO
